Hallo, Satoshi Nakamoto, can you introduce yourself?

Hi, foremost, thanks for having me, I really appreciate this.
My name is Satoshi Nakamoto, I’m from Rotterdam (the Netherlands). I’ve been doing street art for some time now. I started with stencils, and spray paint, and now I’m doing it with Ministeck.
And I love to share my art on the streets.

Why did you decide to use Satoshi Nakamoto as your artist name?

Satoshi Nakamoto is the inventor of Bitcoin. Everybody knows he is the inventor, but nobody
knows who he is or who they are. I really like this way of getting known, people know who made the piece, but they don’t really know who did it.

What is Ministeck?

Ministeck is an old German toy, and it was really popular in the Netherlands in the 70s and 80s. With this medium, I’m making pixeled pictures in different sizes.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of using Ministeck? Why did you choose this technic?

With the ministeck I can make my pieces just like how they are in my mind.
There are only 24 colors, so it’s hard to find the right color for the picture you want to make. The ministeck pieces are also limited in 4 different shapes. I really love these limitations.

Can you tell us more about your work process?

I’ve got a workspace near my home, it’s part of a building that’s used by other artists and for street art workshops by Rewriters Rotterdam.
It’s great to close my door and let things go and start creating. I often forget what time it is, and before I realize it, I’ve been working 8 or 10 hours on a piece.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

My inspiration is Hip-hop (not only the music but the complete lifestyle), music in general, other street artists, Blaxploitation, and comics.

What benefits do you think social media offers to street art artists?

It’s great that you can share your work with the world via Instagram or another platform. I’m using Instagram as a lookbook, so everybody who’s interested can see my work.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to become a street artist?

Whatever you want to do on the streets, do it.

What are some of your upcoming projects?

I’m working on some pieces for an upcoming show in Rotterdam. I’m going to start a collaboration with a store in Germany.
And the best of all, there are a lot of workshops planned with schoolkids in the near future.

What aspects of these workshops do you like more?

The funny thing about the workshop is that most of the kids do not know the medium. So everything they create with it is totally new for them.

Last question: Do you have any film, series, music, or book recommendations?

Documentary: Big fun in the big Town on YouTube, it’s an excellent documentary about the early days of Hip-Hop

Music: All the songs of Bill Withers, I love the music and the lyrics; they are great.

Book: All the books of Robert Beck, aka Iceberg Slim.

Don’t forget to follow Satoshi Nakamoto on Instagram.
